How to read your birth chart

Start with the big three. Your Sun sign is the engine — what motivates you and where your vitality flows. Your Moon sign is the interior — how you process feelings, what makes you feel safe, who you are at 2am. Your rising signis the doorway — the energy people meet before they know you. When someone “doesn't seem like their sign,” the answer is almost always a Moon or ascendant pulling in a different direction.

Then look at Mercury (how you think and communicate), Venus (how you love and what you find beautiful) and Mars (how you act, fight and desire). These personal planets change signs quickly, so they vary a lot between people born the same year. Jupiter and Saturn describe your growth and discipline patterns, while Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move so slowly they color whole generations.

Birth chart FAQ

What is a birth chart?

A birth chart (natal chart) is a map of where every planet stood at the exact moment and place you were born. It includes your Sun sign, Moon sign, rising sign (ascendant), and the zodiac positions of Mercury through Pluto — together they describe far more of your personality than the Sun sign alone.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Only for the rising sign and house placements — the ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours. Your Sun, Mercury, Venus and outer planets are accurate with just the date. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, so on days when it changed signs an exact time matters.

Is this birth chart calculator really free?

Yes — completely free, no account, no email, no paywall. The calculation runs in your browser using an astronomical ephemeris, and the data you enter never leaves your device.

What are the big three in astrology?

Your big three are the Sun sign (core identity), Moon sign (emotional world) and rising sign (how others first see you). Astrologers read them together as the foundation of any chart interpretation.

What's the difference between tropical and sidereal zodiac?

This calculator uses the tropical zodiac — the system used by Western astrology, anchored to the seasons. Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the constellations, which currently shifts most placements back by about 24 degrees.
